Wal-Mart

The goal was to create a pocket-sized manual to demonstrate painting defects and how to fix them, while providing a product guide for paint department employees. Valspar, their largest and most preferred paint department vendor contracted KerrCom to develop a booklet that met this goal. The end result was a laminated guide with 48 pages that was split into two halves; one discussed paint problems and the other the product remedies.

ERTL Models
The Star Wars line of plastic models were reintroduced and all of the instruction sheets needed to be reworked. KerrCom produced 15 sheets of instruction, translating them for 10 different languages. As a prototype model, these vector drawings were converted to a Flash based instruction delivery system for the internet. Please click on the thumbnail image to view the prototype module.

Wheels, Inc
This large fleet auto leasing company needed a glovebox format booklet that reminded drivers to bring their autos in for required warranty maintanence and to serve as a source of service contact information. One of the main problems was that each automobile manufacturer has a different warranty maintanence period based upon miles (1500, 2000, etc.). In addition, it was discovered that over the life of a 3 year lease, drivers change their addresses as many as four times, so the final product needed to have built-in flexibility. The solution was to create a standard body with a clear pocket on the back where the driver inserted their new ID information. A plastic wheel containing the manufacturer's warranty period was bound into the booklet with a window revealing what work needed to be done at a given mileage., The product provided Wheels the ability to customize without the expense of reprinting the book for each manufacturer.

Museum of Science and Industry Chicago
The Museum created a live communication theater called the E-Suite from which it broadcast a wide range of educational experiences ranging from viewing live surgical procedures to playing multimedia lessons. The suite featured three plasma screens and a variety of tools required to run the presentation functions. A users guide was needed with the request that it be easy to reproduce. The final booklet broke the operation instructions into understandable chunks, including a quick reference guide the served as an outline for the entire book. The product received an excellence award by the Society of Technical Communicators Chicago Chapter in 2005.

Motorola, Inc.
The first FlipPhone, produced in the 1990's was a high-priced top end product and required an owners manual to match. The result was a book that was easy to use and featured button diagrams that would allow a customer to use the phone without needing to read the text. These diagrams were to be the standard in Motorola manuals for the next 15 years.
